Alain and I feel as though the gallery was a great success and surpassed our expectations. We couldn't have made it happen without every single one of you. From the opening of the War Child exhibit in december to Anna Panchev, Beth Dyer, Carlos Weisz and of course, Parishil.

This is a font I made while conjuring my last show "Homeward Bound" at the barbershop gallery. It evolved from a recent intense study of 'cholo' writing created by latino gang members. You can see some similarities in my design.

Over the course of two days in july Alexi Parizeau captured the process of Adam Hilborn's first solo show "HOMEWARD BOUND" at the Barbershop Gallery. The camera was capturing images every 3 seconds with a Canon 5D Mk2 and 24mm 1.4F lens, tethered to a laptop.

The first night was a special invitation "Dinner with the Artist". The Dinner was prepared by Justine and Sara Wood of Les Louises. Friends and family we're asked to attend the private viewing. (please see previous blog "pre-viewing dinner" for more details)

The following evening "HOMEWARD BOUND" was open to the public.

"Relationship" by Elizabeth Dyer

Elizabeth Dyer’s latest body of work, Relationship, plays with illusion and reality using wallpapers and colours that make you want to linger in the rooms awhile. By carefully editing actual rooms that she has photographed in Europe, she conveys the true sense of the space.

Her training as a decorative painter has influenced the use of materials and, in combination with her various layering techniques, plays with the ambiguity between fine art and decorating. Each room within the painting overlaps one another creating an illusion as opposed to a defined space.

Elizabeth’s work has been primarily figuratively based but in this exhibition she explores the background as the primary subject. Light and shadow dramatize the room’s contours and the absence of a figure makes it quiet. There is a personal edge to the rooms she paints which allows the viewer to create her/his own relationship with the painting. The new collection illustrates a serene yet playful sense of timelessness.

Pre-viewing dinner for Adam Hilborn's Homeward Bound show

Selected guest were invited to enjoy an evening dinner in the Barbershop Gallery the night before the official opening of Adam Hilborn's 'Homeward Bound' art show. Food was provided by the Les Louises chefs from Royal Canada Ballet. Guest got to dine with the artist, getting to know him and understand his approach to art and this specific series.

Adam Hilborn open's his first solo show titled "HOMEWARD BOUND". The collection of work includes all the pieces exploring a figurative and symbolic direction.

In her first solo show "Imagery to Your Altitude", Anna Panchev creates a split environment between the surreal and almost tangible. One can lost in the intricacies and small corners of this world. Beautiful optical and chaotic randomness somehow create a sense of serenity. Lots is left for the viewer to explore.

Movie Night

The Barbershop Gallery hosted the first of many $4 Movie Night yesterday. The casual and intimate evening featured four shorts and one feature by local film makers. The night aims to showcase local directors and offer budge friendly entertainment for the neighborhood. The night was a success with a full house. 50 Artists 50 Photos

Last week Barbershop Gallery presented 50 artists 50 photos with Blog TO for the Contact film festival. The portraits are of 50 local promising artists that are also featured on Blog TO's website. The opening went on until the wee hours of the morning and featured an amazing line up of Dj's ( ie: Dave Binette from Shit La Merde and Andy Capp from Bang the Party) projections courtesy of Kineticform, as well as some amazing baked treats courtesy of Sugar Baking. The show is up during the entire duration of the Contact festival and all are available for purchase with proceeds going to Sketch, a local non profit that fosters arts based learning for street youth. Barbershop gallery is proud to be one of the official hosts at this years Contact photography festival. 50 Artists, 50 Photos showcases 50 photos of 50 Toronto-based emerging artists. The exhibit is an extension of the Artist Gallery unveiled recently at blogto.com/artists. Curated by award-winning photobloggers Sam Javanrouh, Rannie Turingan and Istoica and presented by blogto.com. Opening night is May 7th (7pm - midnight) and will feature a line-up of DJs, visuals and a cash bar. Exhibit opens May 7th and runs until May 31st, 2009.

The Superlative Order of Wandering Portraitists is up for one more week at the Barbershop Gallery. Last Thursday Parishil co-founder Alain Parizeau had his opening for the Simon Blackfoot art show at the Barbershop Gallery in Toronto. His art is influenced by a month long canoe trip in Canada's northern frontier and captures the simple beauty of the nature and the eccentric adventurers that live there. The show was very well received and is up until the end of the month, please come by and check it out!!!!

On Friday the 19th of February Barbershop Gallery will be hosting a groupshow featuring work inspired by the freshly elected 44th President of the United States. It has been a lonnnnnng time since a political figure, let alone an American one, instilled the world with so much hope and promise. Yes the current state of the world seems to be in shambles with multiple financial crisis, political instability abroad, and A-rod using steroids. But the public have placed a great deal of faith in this man. And even if Obama and his team do not fix everything in one term, they have still forced Americans to rethink about the nature of political discourse and the importance of being involved in politics. So come celebrate as some of the city's biggest talents display their artistic interpretation of the drunken hope that Obama brings on his first visit to the great white north!

Barbershop Grand Opening War Child Campaign 2009

Barbershop Gallery was opened in the fall of 2008 by Parshil Studio in Toronto. It's first official show was the creative work done by Parishil for the 2009 War Child national campaign in partnership with John St Media. The opening took place in early December and drew a large crowd of clients, friends, and curious pedestrians for a very enjoyable Thursday evening. The event was made possible by the generous help of RedBull Canada, Malibu, Les Louises Catering , and DJ Dopey.
